WSET Level 3 Award in Wines

 

This advanced level qualification is designed to give a throughout understanding of the factors that account for the style, quality and price of the principal still, sparkling and fortified wines of the world. The qualification provides in-depth comprehension of tasting techniques and a detailed understanding of grape growing and winemaking.

It is considered a prerequisite for candidates planning to study for the WSET Level 4 Diploma.

 

Upon successful completion, you will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin and will be able to use the associated WSET certified logo.

  • Professionals in the wine and hospitality industry needing core information to advise management and customers with authority and make informed selections of wines in a variety of situation.

  • Versed wine enthusiasts who wish to learn about wine in a rigorous and structured manner and gain an internationally-recognised wine qualification.

Unit 1

  • The key factors in the production of wine: location, grape growing, winemaking, maturation and bottling

  • How these key factors influence the key characteristics of the principal

  • Still wines of the world

  • Sparkling wines of the world

  • Fortified wines of the world

  • How to apply your understanding to explain wine style and quality

Unit 2

  • How to taste wines, describe their characteristics and evaluate their quality, using the WSET Level 3 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT)

 

Recommended Previous Preparation

Before starting the course, candidates should have read the textbook and the coursebook. This course is challenging, therefore we recommend at least 55 hours of self-study.

 

Assessment

The 2 1/2 hours assessment takes place in the last session of the course and consists of two units.

Unit 1 is assessed by a closed-book exam of 50 multiple-choice questions and a short-written answer paper. Unit 2 is assessed by a blind tasting of two wines. A mark of 55% is required on both the tasting and theory papers to pass.

 

Entry requirements

This course is NOT suitable for beginners. It is recommended that you hold the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines and Spirits or can demonstrate the equivalent level of knowledge.

Candidate should be over 18 years of age.
